Hi folks, I said id try and put some details up of my current system if i got a chance so here goes.

Current system is a fresh faced approximately 490 gallon in wall afair. basicaly the whole system and the room it sits in were built and designed by myself. ( I like getting my hands dirty )

Main tank is 6.5'L x 3.5'W x 2'H, with a full length weir, backed up with a tower sump assembly comprising of 4 2'x2' tanks. running from the top.. cryptic tank, then main overflow and cheato tank, then to the DSB tank and finally out to the bottom tank which is the take off for the return pump.

circulation consists of 4 x sequence 10,000's and 1 sequence 10,000 return pump. running a barrel role wave motion backed by timed tidal laminar flow patterns in a gyre motion.

skimming was an AP702 (but has now been replaced by an Orca 200). I Also run 03 at 25mg for 2 hours every day.

I constantly run Rowaphos via a fluidiser, and carbon in a secondary reactor.

calcium addition by a monster DIY reactor running branch media 24/7 (no kalkwasser addition)

Lighting a very moderate (for the surface area) 2 x 400W 10K BLV's running on Vue electronic ballasts and luminarc reflectors, backed by 4 x 54W Narva blues (future addition will be a couple of 150W 20K spots).

Lighting times: halides 9 hours a day, Actinics 11hours with an hour overlap each side of the halides

No addatives are used, just lots and lots of food.

perameters.

Temp 25.5 ( average drift is 25-26)
No3 usually 0.01>ppm
Po4 0.008ppm or below. (D&D kit)
pH average 8.3 (8.27 min / 8.34 max)
Alk: average 9.0 Dkh
Ca 430ppm
Mg 1350ppm
Sr between 4-10ppm

Notable feature: 95% of the systems rock is DIY snowcrete / aragamax / salt crystal mix that was seeded with LR rubble. the system runs both a DSB and shallow sand bed filtration.

Still a very very young system, with most of the stock so far origionating as frags rather than full colonies, so lots of growing out to do. but overal, im really chuffed with how its comming on at present (around 18months since the water went in and only 14 months since the first frags went in)

so some pics.

some build pics.

This shot was taken between the rock being made and the side panes being put in place. You can see in this image the 4 strainers for the closed loops. 2 years later, they are still working fine with no loss of flow and minimal coraline growth as they are shaded under the rockwork.

The tank completed prior to filling and curing the rock structures for 6 weeks to leach out the salt and lime.

Hi Keith, I wish it had been, it would have made my life alot easyer. The whole tank room and dining room were origionaly my garage that backed onto our lounge. so i basically cut the garage in half, made one half the dining room with an archway leading from the lounge, then used the other end for the tank room. it basically had to be built from the ground up with the floor leveled, the walls tiled, ceiling re-done, a door put in, plumbed, and a seperate consumer unit put in especially for the system which runs 4 seperate protected rings so that no matter what happens, if something goes pop, it will only trip off one line. i did this so that i could spread the circulation across the 4 rings so that no matter what happens (bar a total power cut) the tank allways has some circulation.

Mant thanks for the kind words folks.

Regards

Simon.

great job simon. this sure was quite a project for you. how long did the planning stage to completion(1st livestock) took?

Cheers Reefman.

The designing was quite easy to be fair. I was forced into stripping down my old 200 gallon system becouse it was just packed solid,

Some images of that old system.

so me and the wife decided on a new home in which i could have my own area for a larger long term tank without impacting on the house in any other way than cosmeticaly.. Ive desighned and built a few large systems for people over the years and a few commercial systems, so this one was just an extention of everything ive done to date using principles that i know work. I generally take the best bits of everything ive done to date and add in a few improvements on each build. The DSB and SSB combination is something that ive had many many years experience with and know how to get the best from, so that wasnt realy an issue. the sump system was just a mad moments brainwave when i considerd the space available in the room offset against the space that i knew the closed loop system would take up..I just figured that if i couldnt go outwards under the tank with a conventional sump, then why not go upwards and build a tower system that is fed strait from the weir with no drop untill it goes down through the sump tanks in turn. The main circulation and reefscape principles are taken from observations during my times in the Maldives.

To be honest, im not sure how i come up with the ideascompletely, it just happens, I look closely at the biology of how a system runs, the chemistry, nutrient cycles and biodiversity etc, and then try to work on the mechanics in a way that maximises those areas in as natural a way as possible compared to what ive experienced in the wild. I do obviously use some equipment that makes life a bit easyer like a reactor, phosphate media, ph monitoring and temperature control, but other than that im a devout anti all-in-one computor control person. everything runs seperately and independently from everything else becouse i like having to look after things. It keeps me in touch with the system in a more tactile way and it forces me to pay close attention which is how i learn the finer aspects of what makes a system work effectively on a day to day and long term basis.

I think the total time from drawing it out in Sketchup, to actually placing the first frags in was about 8 months. but during that time I was also re-building the downstairs of our house, so i'd say realistically the total build time from start to finish (cured rock) and first stock, it was probably a 5 month project all in.

regards

Simon.

Amazing system!!

Few questions:

How far up are the light bulbs from the water surface in this photo? Do you find the two pendents gives the 6+ feet tank an evenly lit effect?

PB270705s.jpg

How much water is flowing thru your sumps? and how do you find the "cryptic zone" helping with your filtration scheme?

MORE PICS PLEASE!
