I tried to keep a detail spreadsheet of what I spent starting up my tank and quickly learned that any sort of tallying is a bad idea. The sad part is that it's only 12 gallon. Sigh. With that said, I will post it up...

thats why when my tank crashed my wife asked how much i lost in money and i told her only a few hundred, not thousands

I like to have a monthly budget (to keep things in control), but otherwise don't do it!

yeah... overall bad idea. i'm going to print out the spreadsheet and burn it. lol

i try to keep my girlfriend in the loop on how much everything is costing, but i can see how more difficult it is when you have a family.

I like the post thanks for posting it up I went from a 42 tall to a 40 breeder up graded all the equipment and sand coral spending and the frag swap I could def. say well over 2,000$ it is crazy how much we drop into this hobby but in the long run it is worth it

I stopped after reaching $1,000. It's a hobby and leave at that.

I started a spreadsheet for my new tank build. On the top line it had "how much budget is left"

After that line read -$312, I quit keeping it.

It's just better not to know.

I have a black-hole folder that I stuff all my reef receipts in (for warranty reasons).
Fortunately my significant other doesn't do any of our filing.

Chem cheif my hobby is cars also. I try to work on my car when I have the time but the tank is always needing up keeping so.
