My friend Jonnie is in the process of researching and learning about saltwater setups - He asked me to teach him but I told him I know less than him .
Anyway, everyone say hello as I told him this was the best resource for information and filled with great people as well...

Welcome aboard, Jonnie! (why not take the plunge and create a profile so you don't have to bother with Andrew ;) )

SO much info here and so many helpful folks...

what kind of set up are you interested in creating? how big? what kind of animals do you think you want to keep? get an idea of what you want, then we'll help you figure out ways to do it :)

Best of luck!

Help setting up

Thanks For the shout out Drew. I'm looking to set up my 29 gallon tank as of now all I have is a tank and a cabinet stand. I am a total newbie at this and it's to be a new hobbie. I'm looking for information on how to set up and maintain a saltwater tank. Real would appreciate some help

Jonnie - this is one of those hobbies where you can consider yourself a noob for years and years - there is so much to know and so many opinions...

remember that everyone you hear from has his or her ways of doing it - and what works for me might not work for you - so sift through everything and figure what will work best for YOU!

I like to have the largest set-up possible, becuase the greater the water volume, the slower changes happen when the system is left to its own devices... that said, i'm about to set up my second tank which will be a 20 gallon (my current one is 75 + ~30 gal sump)

Check out tank threads for ideas on equipment, plumbing and stocking - that's a great place to start. If you see a tank you really like, you can pm the reefer to ask questions.

:)

There is a "Search" tab on top that will allow you to search keywords (a great place to start) and a "Chat" tab but only really strange people go in there and should be avoided if you want to learn about anything other than paintball, aruba and deez :biglaugh:

In Nemo's tank was a Moorish Idol. They don't do well in captivity (their mortality rate is REALLY high in hobby tanks). I'd steer clear of that fish.

Hippo tangs need a lot of space - I think a 29 is too small for that fish :( (like a shoe box is too small for a kitten)

a small yellow tang (like maybe the size of a quarter) could start out in a 29 gallon, but might outgrow it pretty fast...

...i have a 75 gal tank (full set-up) for sale - ;)

Ok so stay away from the Chat room. Andrew is that your area? Going by the topics spoken in there.
So What fish would you put in a 29g to start out with? I would love your 75g but it would not fit in any area I have....

nemo = clownfish would be fine in a 29gallon as would a few seahorses. you will want to research skimmer vs. non-skimmer systems, live rock, lighting, salinity, coral care - just a few things to start using the "search" tab...it's all very informative.
