The big piece def looks dead but I got the impression he was talking about the small green coral on top of it.

He didn't import it. He just brought it back on the plane via baggage. Anyway, it looks like it's not coral any more. It's already calcified or on the way to it. It's live rock now (kind of)... the green stuff is macroalgae, can't tell from the picture but I suspect the gentleman in the previous posts are correct.
I do not believe Lenny's comment was meant to even be rude. He was just expressing the point that you shouldn't just bring back stuff from the reefs. It's already on a downward spiral as it is so why aid it. Please remember all the sand and the rocks that are currently there are from coral that turn into calcium carbonate that build the reefs down there.

Your certainly right, I in all honestly really didn't mean to sound rude. I was just expressing the fact as you said, why make matters worse than they are by taking something from OUR precious ecosystem. The reefs are in bad shape as it is, lets not add to it.
