Hello all, I had a question on LED lighting fixtures as I will be upgrading to a 210 soon enough and would like to go all LED if possible. I recently won the 24" LED fixture from Acan Lighting at the swap and I must say it is very impressive, thank you so much for giving me the chance to own such a remarkable piece of technology. But anyways, not too long ago I saw a Solaris I5 fixture for sale and was interested in purchasing it until I came to find out that Solaris went out of business. My question now is are there any other big companies such as the former Solaris, that makes LED fixtures for reef tanks? Thanks, Fortunato

If you want to see how they look on a big tank, you are welcome to bring the fixture over so we can compare your LED to my 400W radium or helios on HQI or e-ballast. I would like to see the result before I pull the trigger. :scratchch

Ooo yeah that would be awesome! I think I'll take you up on that offer. I got a chemistry final tomorrow which will be my last for the semester so I'm free after that

Great. I think comparing them at dusk will be better since my tank does get some nature light during the day which makes it difficult to appreciate the difference in light intensity and color. Tomorrow or Thursday are good after 6pm. Otherwise we can do it on the weekend.

Mark, why don't you guys give Fortunato an idea of how much $ he'll be talking about for the Pacific Sun for his 210g tank? Without knowing for sure I'm thinking he'll be in the $3,000 range. Maybe a little less, maybe a little more. Surely close though.

Hahah thanks Russ....don't know if that's a price range I can shoot for right now. I bet these fixtures are gonna fall in price in a few years

Russ - I think it is unfair for you to make comments about other vendor products without checking first what they have or offered.

The offer which was given about month ago would cost Mark $1950 for 72" tank (3 modules of 120W) - at the same time two 36" ATI T5 powermodules would cost over $2000.00 and more with the bulbs.

and if he decided to go with 90W units - it would have cost $1575 which about half of what you are stating.

the prices were taken directly from the thread of $525 (90W) and $650(120W).

Rafal, from the thread you reference, it SPECIFICALLY says those prices are no longer available. I quoted nothing other than what I read, quoted by Felix. Not misstating anything.

Nothing unfair.

I think we all know what was the price on these units from month ago.

also, in the very near future they are coming with master/slave unit option so the price of multiple modules will be greatly reduced and nowhere near $3000 as you stated.

and I understand that you are giving the link to the price of the master unit and try to do the simple math times 3 but why would you order 3 master units for 72" tank instead of one master plus 2 slaves units?

FYI............

Technology always changes and so do prices. Many competitors products are coming out for LED's so I would worry about it as the time approaches.

Not to take sides, but Russ was just advising Fortunato to consider the financial aspects which seems to escape many of us in this bloody hobby. I don't see anything wrong with that especially if the pricing was posted on reef builders/the company's website (with conversion factors) very recently for the new model BT EX lamps vs the standard python.

Also please note, SWC has a phenomenal reputation and flawless business practices and adheres to the vendor code of conduct... he made the vendor sticky too.

I was looking into those PacificSun LED's as well, but opted not to get them because I was doing the tank upgrade/old tank breakdown and sell next week (at the time) and couldn't wait 1 month (which ended up being 3 months for members) for the deal to come to fruition. Also it was a new vendor with 0 ratings and 0 donations, there are risks involved especially in these times, you can't expect everybody to jump on the bandwagon (granted many of us wanted to and at the moment wish we did). DISCLAIMER: It's the internet and I don't intend on anything I type to come across harshly.

Plus let's remember the time value of money...

Now lets not make a good thing sour. First and foremost we are here to help fellow reefers. Thats the whole idea behind supporting LED technology, saving money from power consumption and bulb replacements. What Rafal said is true about the Master Slave units coming in 2010. We are working on a method of making true modular units. At the same time, pricing deals will be put in place for purchasing multiple units. We want these units to be competitive in the market and ultimately affordable.

What some people don't realize is that 24 months pass by very quickly. Thats the amount of time we estimate the cost difference between these lights and MH or premium T5 fixtures would take to recoup. After 2 years, your really saving a lot of money and the cost of the fixture has paid for itself.

We are also working on a Pre-Launch sale to offer everyone, waiting for approval from the manufacturer. It won't be as astronomical as the groupbuy price, but MR members will be able to save a good amount. Stay tuned for the post in the Marketplace.
